Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: Using Research to Inform Mathematics Policy & Practice in Maine: A Focus on Algebra Recommendations in the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Report

This conference in Augusta, Maine, focused on the final report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, “Foundations for Success.” Co-author Dr. Francis “Skip” Fennell, Professor of Education at McDaniel College, presented findings and recommendations from the report to math teachers, instruction specialists, and policymakers from across Maine. Participants learned how the report and other research can be used by Maine districts and schools to inform decisions. Video clips include Dr. Fennell’s presentation and a question-and-answer session.

Region 1 Parent Centers Annual Conference: Addressing Behavior in the Elementary School Classroom

June 2009

At the annual conference of the Region 1 Parent Centers, REL-NEI sponsored a keynote address focused on the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guide, “Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School Classroom.” Watch a video of co-author Dr. Krista Kutash of the University of South Florida, presenting the Practice Guide’s five recommendations and the research behind them to staff members at federally funded parent centers in New England, New York, and New Jersey.

Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades

This conference co-hosted by REL-NEI and the New England Comprehensive Center highlighted the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guide, “Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades,” to provide policymakers and practitioners with guidance on how to more effectively educate these students. Video clips include the keynote address by Dr. Robin Scarcella, one of the primary authors, who presented the Practice Guide and talked about the research behind its recommendations.

New Hampshire High School Redesign Forum: Moving from High Schools to Learning Communities
September 2008
Nearly 300 educators from around New Hampshire attended this daylong conference in Bedford, New Hampshire, to explore how the state’s secondary schools could transform themselves now that New Hampshire’s dropout age has increased from 16 to 18. Co-sponsored by REL-NEI and the New Hampshire State Board of Education, the forum included presentations by state education leaders, breakout sessions on key strategies for reforming high schools, and a videotaped keynote address by Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, Professor of Education at Stanford University a national expert on high school redesign.

Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: High-Risk Student Populations
March 2008
More than 100 educators, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders representing all states and jurisdictions in the Northeast and Islands Region attended this two-day conference in Providence, Rhode Island. The conference showcased REL-NEI research projects that examine issues in high-risk student populations and offered participants the opportunity to discuss how this research may affect their decisions regarding state education policies. Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: Teacher Quality

This regional conference in Providence, Rhode Island, provided a rich opportunity for discussion of research findings on policy challenges including: reducing teacher turnover, attracting and retaining high-quality teachers, supporting new teachers, improving teacher-preparation program accountability, and making the best use of paraprofessionals. Dr. Richard Ingersoll of the University of Pennsylvania and Consortium for Policy Research in Education gave the keynote address: “The Teacher Shortage: A Case of Wrong Diagnosis and Wrong Prescription.”
