Student achievement in mathematics in middle and high school is a national and regional concern. To help strengthen students’ mathematics achievement, national- and state-level policymakers and education advocates have promoted offering algebra to students in middle school. REL-NEI currently is conducting a three-year study, in primarily rural Maine and Vermont schools, to examine how improving access to Algebra I to eighth-graders by providing them with an online course benefits student math achievement and course-taking patterns. The study will continue through fall 2010.
This webinar provided an overview of the study and the design of the online algebra course. The moderator described regional needs and the presenters discussed what practitioners can expect to learn at the conclusion of this rigorous research study. The webinar also provided background for future discussions related to algebra readiness, online course offerings, and the logistics of conducting rigorous research in real schools and classrooms.
