In this webinar co-hosted with the Region II Equity Assistance Center (EAC), Dr. Russell Rumberger, Professor of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, presented six research-based recommendations for reducing dropout rates from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guide on Dropout Prevention, which he co-authored.

He also discussed how district and school administrators can overcome barriers to the recommendations and implement them. Dr. Rumberger’s research interests focus on school dropouts, school mobility, educational underachievement of ethnic and language minority students, and school effectiveness.

Following Dr. Rumberger’s presentation, a small panel of discussants—including a district superintendent, a REL-NEI researcher, and a state-level education administrator—described their own work on dropout prevention, linking it to the Practice Guide recommendations. The webinar drew over 130 participants, many of whom used an online chat room to comment on the presentation and submit questions to the presenters.
